Loras Sends Webster Home, 3-1

Magical Run Ends in NCAA First Round

The Webster University men's soccer team fell to Loras College(IA), 3-1, in Dubuque on November 14.  A team that found the right chemistry to propel it all the way to the NCAA Tournament, met its match on a cool Iowa night.

The host Duhawks, an NCAA final four participant in 2008, solved the Gorlok defense that had been Webster's mainstay during its march to the post-season.  Loras went up 1-0 at the 20:44 mark and added a second goal at the 32:00 mark.  When Loras went up 3-0 at the 53:00 mark in the second half, it all but sealed the Gorloks fate.

True to the team that came back from an 0-5 start to win a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship, Webster showed its resiliency.  Mike Riti (SR, Webster Groves HS, STL) put Webster on the board at the 66:00 mark on a shot off a pass from fellow senior, Andy Rudroff (DeSmet Jesuit HS, STL).

The Gorloks seemed to find a spark as they kept pressure on in the Loras end for a 10-minute stretch following Riti's goal.  After being outshot 13-2 in the first half, Webster had six shots during this run, but couldn't muster another goal.  Loras goes to 19-2-2 and will advance to the regional final.

Webster ends the season 10-7-1 and head coach Marty Todt ends the year with 209 victories, his 200th igniting the team's 10-1 run that culminated in an NCAA berth.  A large contingent of seniors ended the game in a tearful embrace of fellow teammates as they received their participation awards from the NCAA.

Seniors Riti, Rudroff, Matt Geringer (Hazelwood Central HS, STL), Pete Mothe (Lindoln HS, Argentina), Kyle Gamache (Francis Howell HS, STL), Jimmy McDonnell (Christian Brothers HS, STL), Alfons Rama (Mehlville HS, STL), Kyle Lewman (Belleville East HS, STL), and Aaron Belisle (Lindbergh HS, STL), all played their final game for Webster.
