Todt’s Next Win Will Be A Bicentennial Celebration

Marty Todt’s first win this fall will put him at the coveted 200 victory plateau. The dean of the Webster University coaching staff, he begins his 22nd season as the head men's soccer coach. With the most wins as a men’s soccer coach in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) history, Todt has compiled a 101-59-18 conference record and a 199-160-42 record overall.

In addition to four SLIAC conference titles while at Webster, Todt has been named the SLIAC Coach of the Year four different times, most recently being honored in 2005 and 2006. Todt ranks 51st in wins among the 380 active coaches in NCAA Division III. Brian Hoener, head coach at Fontbonne University reflected on Todt’s imminent milestone. “I think it is a testimony to Marty’s commitment and dedication as a coach over the past 20 years. His teams are always well prepared and well coached. He is a class act in the St. Louis soccer community.”

At St. Mary’s High School, Todt played alongside fellow standouts Jim Bokern, John Carenza, and Don Reis for the Dragons and continued his career at UMSL and Meramec. Todt joined Coach Pat McBride’s staff as an assistant at Meramec Community College in 1976, winning a national championship their first season and finishing second in 1977. Wanting to take on additional responsibilities, Todt landed the Gorlok’s head coaching position in 1988.

Soccer is at the center of his everyday life. In addition to his role at Webster, Todt is Director of the Midwest Soccer Academy in St. Louis. He was a member of the Budweiser O-30 1988 national championship team, noting “he was the only member who didn’t play professionally,” and continued playing until injuries took their toll in recent years.

When reflecting on his desire to coach as he enters his 32nd season on the sidelines, Todt observed that Webster has been a family affair for him. While at the University he completed his degree in management in 1992, the same year his daughter Amy completed her education degree. He also coached son Jeff, a standout for the Gorloks, who graduated from Webster with an accounting degree. “I can’t imagine not coaching at Webster,” Todt mused.

Webster University Director of Athletics, Tom Hart, observed “as Coach Todt prepares to lead our men’s soccer program for the 22nd straight year, Webster University soccer and Marty Todt have become synonymous in the St. Louis area.”

The first opportunity to secure win #200 comes vs. Millikin University on September 1 as Webster opens the season at home at the St. Louis Soccer Park at 7:00 p.m.
