Webster 72 St. Mary of the Woods 64
The Webster University women’s basketball team took a break from the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule, defeating St. Mary of the Woods College (IN), 72-64, at Grant Gymnasium on January 31. What looked to be a runaway win for the Gorloks became a little close for comfort.
Despite opening up a 12-point halftime lead and extending it to 18 in the second half, the Webster lead had dwindled to three with 3:55 remaining in the game. Five straight free throws by the Gorloks, and a jumper by Megan Willett (SO, Parkway West HS, STL) with 1:55 left, put them back up by 10 and the game was in hand.
Ayrica Lockett (SO, Crossroad Prep, STL) paced the Gorloks with 15 points, on 7-11 shooting from the field, eight rebounds, and three steals. Tori Fenemor (FR, St. Charles HS, STL), still nursing a rib injury, came off the bench to score 15 points in 13 minutes.
Webster is 13-6 overall on the season and in first place in the SLIAC with an 8-2 record. The 13 wins on the season are the sixth highest total in 24 years of Webster women’s basketball. Webster returns to SLIAC action on February 3, at home, against Greenville College (IL). The Gorloks then head to Eureka College (IL) on February 6.
