Awards Banquet Marks Successful Year

The Webster University Athletic Department hosted its 25th annual Awards Ceremony May 1 at Grant Gymnasium in the University Center.  Over 200 student/athletes were recognized for their participation in Gorlok sports for the 2009-2010 year.  Parents, coaches, honored guests, and staff swelled the number of those in attendance to over 400 for the event.

Student/athletes recognized for individual awards included Abby Williams, women's volleyball, for the Scholar-Athlete Award, Andy Rudroff, men's soccer, for the President's Award, and Kyle Wheeler, men's baseball, for the Inspiration Award.

Christy Capkovic, women's soccer, was awarded the Women's Student-Athlete of the Year.  Capkovic set numerous Webster season and career records for women's soccer during its season, leading the NCAA in goals and points for 2009 as well.  Will Savage, men's baseball, who earlier in the day had pitched the Gorloks to a conference title clinching 1-0 victory, was named the Male Student-Athlete of the Year.

President Dr. Elizabeth J. Stroble was in attendance to present the President's Award and also handed out the awards to student/athletes who competed for four years for the Gorloks in their respective sports.  Dr. Paul Carney, Vice President for Student and Enrollment Management, and Larry Baden, Faculty Athletic Representative, were presenters as well.

Tom Hart, Director of Athletics, who was the emcee for the evening's program, challenged the student/athletes who will be returning next year to aim to one day be members of the newly created Webster Athletics Hall of Fame.
