Webster University women's soccer heads into the 2010 season with a balance of experienced returnees and a talented group of newcomers. A determined and focused team looks forward to the challenges of winning the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and returning to the NCAA III Championships.
Leading the way up top will be senior captains Christy Capkovic and Megan Niederschulte. Capkovic was an All-Conference and All-Region selection, and the NCAA III Statistical Champion in goals and points per game. The Webster career and single season leader in both categories, Capkovic had 33 goals and 78 points in 2009. Megan Niederschulte, a three time All-Conference selection, scored 22 goals last season and is currently third on the Webster career goal list. Both are on their way to becoming the two most productive duo at forward in program history. They will provide the leadership and skills necessary for this team to succeed offensively.
A balanced mixture of returners and newcomers will comprise the Gorlok midfield in 2010. Juniors Jordan Geller, Morgan Milfeld, Lindsey Owens and Amanda Zeier will provide the team with excellent all around talent making them valuable to our attack in the midfield. Sophomore Toni Turigliatto will add experience and intelligent play in the middle. Freshmen Katie Aubuchon, Elizabeth Bitzer, Megan Burtnett, Jordan Fosburgh, Amy Raimondo, Kara Spink and Kelsey Tsukayama will be counted on to bring creativity and smart positional play to the midfield.
The defense will be called upon to be steady and consistent. Heading up the defense will be junior captain Izzy Sherfy. Sherfy’s leadership and steady influence will be a key to the team’s defensive success. Senior Kelsey Hunk is a fiery competitor who will provide stability to the backfield. Sophomores Emily Anderson and Caroline Schmidt’s strong distribution skills and composure will be essential to the team’s ability to transition from the back. Freshmen Courtney Keim, Kristen Muehlenfeld and Emily Thompson bring a tough and physical presence to the backfield and they will be expected to step in and play a key role in our success this year.
The goal will be in good hands with sophomores, Maria Arias, Brittany Senator and Shelby Wade in 2010. Wade was named First team All-Conference in 2009. Her crucial save on a penalty kick in the SLIAC Conference Tournament Championship game propelled the team into the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Maria Arias was busy this summer after being selected to the Costa Rican U-20 National team and participating in the 2010 U-20 World Cup in Germany. Brittany Senator is looking to make her mark this season after recovering from hip injury in 2009. All three bring a wealth of experience and a relentless work ethic to the goalkeeper position.
