Cross-Country Teams Win at Westminster

The Webster University men's and women's cross-country teams came out on top in a dual match at Westminster College on September 1, in Fulton, MO.  The teams won the combined meet, where the men and women competed as one squad, 24-31.

The meet provided on-course experience for the teams before they compete in the Washington University Early Bird Invitational on September 4 at Forest Park.  The men's squad has added three new freshmen runners to the already young team, and welcomes the return of St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 2008 All-Conference runner, junior Derrick McKee (Timberland HS, STL).  McKee returns after studying overseas at Webster campuses in 2009.

The women's team welcomed five new runners, including four freshmen, joining 2009 SLIAC All-Conference runners Jane McKibben (SO, Lindbergh HS, STL) and Jessica Parkman (SO, Peru HS, IN)

Coach Dusty Lopez summed up the performance.  "The team looked much better across the board. Our depth is better, we’re running faster overall, and it’s exciting to see the steps we’ve taken. That said, it’s very early in the year and we have to focus on continuing our growth and development over the long season ahead of us. If we can do that, we’ll be in good shape for the postseason."

Westminster President, Dr. George B. 'Barney' Forsythe made a special appearance and served as the 'starter' for the race, firing the starting pistol.
