Women's Soccer Downs Whitman, 2-1

Box Score The Webster University women's soccer team started the 2012 campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Whitman College (WA) at the St. Louis Soccer Park on August 31.  Kristin Montgomery (SO, Duchesne HS, MO) scored both Webster goals in the win.

Montgomery gave the Gorloks a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the contest on a head ball, off a throw-in by Amy Schield (SO, Belleville West HS, IL), playing her first game for Webster.  With the scored tied at 1-1, Montgomery corralled a deflection of a Schield pass that deflected off the Whitman goalkeeper's hands, and directed it into the net.  Her game winner came 13 minutes into the second half.  Montgomery led the Gorloks in goals with 10 in 2011.

Whitman had tied the contest on a foul kick from just outside the penalty box on a nasty shot under the crossbar that Webster goalie Jessica Davis (SO, Belleville West HS, IL) had little chance on.  Davis finished with four saves to pick up her first win of the year.

The Gorloks were outshot 9-5 in the game, and Whitman had a huge 10-1 advantage on corner kicks, but the Webster defense limited the Missionaries to only a couple scoring chances on those 10 kicks.

The game had a heavy downpour for part of the pre-game warmups, but only had one stretch of heavy rain during the contest itself despite the large amount of rain in the vicinity as tornado watches were in effect.  The rains are expected to continue through Sunday morning when the Gorloks hit the field again at the Soccer Park to take on Alma College (MI) at 11:00 a.m.
