INDIANOLA, IA - With two losses to Gustavus Adolphus in the last two days, the best-ever softball run in Webster University history came to an end. The Golden Gusties scored seven runs in the fourth inning and advanced to the World Series with an 11-1 victory Sunday in the Simpson Regional finals.
Webster, the seventh seed in the eight-team regional, is the regional runners-up and finishes the season at 25-18. The Gorloks advanced the championship game by ousting local-rival Washington University, 7-2, earlier in the day. Senior catcher
Dana Vahey had two home runs and five RBI in the victory over the Bears.
The Gorloks scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when freshman
Elizabeth Linck scored on an error. Linck was running for junior
Erynn Coit, who opened the inning with a walk.
Three Webster players -
Megan Sperry,
Kelsey Washam and Vahey - all earned all-tournament team laurels.
Sperry and Washam had the lone two WU hits in the game.
