The Gorlok hit the big time this winter, getting a mention in "The Endlessly Engrossing Bathroom Reader," the 22nd edition in the Uncle John's Bathroom Reader series. The Bathroom Reader is typically the second best seller in the category of 'trivia' books on Amazon. Com, trailing only the World Almanac.
The Bathroom Reader specializes in one and two-page articles on subjects from movies, television, and music, to history, myths, and technology. The Gorlok makes an appearance on page 236 in a one-page piece about "unintimidating mascots" entitled, "Go, Artichokes!" The Gorlok leads off a group of six college mascots that are mentioned, along with how their names were chosen.
Keeping company with the Gorlok in this edition are articles on Belle Gunness, a turn of the 20th-century serial killer in Indiana, unusual celebrity insurance policies (singer Tom Jones' chest hair is insured for $7 million), 'Weird Canada,' and the 'History of Judo."
The Gorlok is no stranger to national publications and has been mentioned as one of the most unusual mascots in the U.S. in several different outlets. Previous shout-outs have been included in such notable publications as Time Magazine and U.S. News and World Report.
A character, General Gorlok, appeared in the Warcraft game series, many years after the Gorlok's creation at Webster. It is unknown if there is any connection between the Warcraft character's unusual spelling matching exactly the modification made by the Webster group who named the beloved mascot.
A 'documentary' entitled, "Day In The Life With The Gorlok," was filmed recently at Webster and can be seen on youtube.com
